The Book of Changes

All 64 hexagrams

Three thousand years, sixty-four patterns. Each one names a situation your life keeps walking into. Grouped here by upper trigram (the top three lines).

Upper trigram: Heaven ·

  • 1The Creative

Six unbroken lines, all yang, all driving force — and the trap of mistaking power for permission to act.

  • 6Conflict

You are technically right. That is a much smaller advantage than you think it is.

  • 10Treading

Walking past something dangerous and not getting bitten — because you knew what you were doing.

  • 12Standstill

The conditions are wrong and you can feel it. The right move is patience, not heroics.

  • 13Fellowship同人

Real fellowship is the kind that works in public, with people you didn't choose — not the closed circle of friends.

  • 25Innocence無妄

Act from the part of you that has no ulterior motive — and if you can't find that part right now, don't act at all.

  • 33Retreat

Pull back before you're pushed back. Strategic retreat is not the same as defeat.

  • 44Coming to Meet

Something small has entered that you should not have let in. Notice it now, before it grows.

Upper trigram: Earth ·

  • 2The Receptive

The strength most people misread as weakness — yielding as a deliberate strategy, not a default.

  • 7The Army

Discipline before force. The fight you have to organize for is not the fight you can wing.

  • 11Peace

The rare moment when momentum and receptivity align — and the rarer skill of not wrecking it.

  • 15Modesty

The only hexagram in the book with no warnings. Modesty isn't a virtue here — it's a strategy that always wins.

  • 19Approach

Something good is coming closer. There is a window. The window is not open forever.

  • 24Return

The first small movement of return. Don't oversteer. Don't celebrate yet. Just let it come back.

  • 36Darkening of the Light明夷

The light is being dimmed. Hide your brightness. Survive this. The sun will rise again.

  • 46Pushing Upward

Slow, steady, persistent upward growth. Like a tree. Don't try to jump — just keep ascending.

Upper trigram: Thunder ·

  • 16Enthusiasm

Energy you can channel into people if you point it right — or burn alone if you don't.

  • 32Duration

Things that last don't stay the same. Constancy is a quality of motion, not stillness.

  • 34Great Power大壯

Power without restraint is the fast road to losing the power. Use less force than you have.

  • 40Deliverance

The tension just broke. The relief is real. Now don't make the mistake of either gloating or relitigating.

  • 51The Arousing Thunder

Shock. Real shock. The kind that resets you. Don't try to look calm — go through it honestly, then keep going.

  • 54The Marrying Maiden歸妹

An asymmetric arrangement — and you are the smaller party. Tread carefully or don't enter at all.

  • 55Abundance

Peak. Noon. The exact top of the curve — which means decline is approaching. Enjoy it. Don't try to extend it.

  • 62Small Exceeding小過

Right now, do the small thing. Not the grand thing. The small thing precisely, attentively, and well.

Upper trigram: Water ·

  • 3Difficulty at the Beginning

The chaos of starting something real — and the discipline of not bailing the first time it gets hard.

  • 5Waiting

The skill of waiting without losing nerve — when the answer is coming, but not yet.

  • 8Holding Together

The moment to commit to the alliance — or to admit you've already been late to it.

  • 29The Abysmal Water

Danger inside danger. The only way out is through — not around, not over, not by pretending it isn't there.

  • 39Obstruction

There's a real obstacle. Don't ram it. Turn around, go a different way, or get someone bigger to help.

  • 48The Well

The well is the underlying resource that doesn't move when everything else does. Find yours. Maintain yours.

  • 60Limitation

Set the limit. Set the budget. Set the bedtime. But not the cruel kind — limitation that makes life possible, not impossible.

  • 63After Completion既濟

The thing you wanted is done. This is the dangerous moment — when finishing becomes complacency, and disorder sneaks in.

Upper trigram: Mountain ·

  • 4Youthful Folly

You don't know what you don't know. The cure is asking once, with humility — not three times, with attitude.

  • 18Work on the Decayed

Something rotted while you were looking the other way. The repair is yours — not because it's fair, but because it's yours.

  • 22Grace

Form matters here, but only in the small things. The big things demand substance — and grace can't substitute for it.

  • 23Splitting Apart

It is collapsing. Do not try to stop it. Anything you do now makes it worse — except hold still.

  • 26Great Taming大畜

You have accumulated more than you've used. Now the bigger work — and the willingness to leave home — is being asked of you.

  • 27Nourishment

What are you feeding yourself with — food, content, company, work? It is becoming you. Choose accordingly.

  • 41Decrease

Cut back voluntarily. The smaller version of this thing — the budget, the team, the life — is going to be better.

  • 52Keeping Still

Stop. Genuinely stop — not pause-and-keep-thinking, actually stop. The stillness is doing the work.

Upper trigram: Wind ·

  • 9Small Taming小畜

The small force at work on the big one — patience, not power. Don't expect a downpour yet.

  • 20Contemplation

Stop pushing for a moment. Climb the tower. Look at what's actually happening before you act again.

  • 37The Family家人

Roles inside the household, fairly given. The strength of the small unit is how clearly each person knows what they're doing.

  • 42Increase

Resources flowing from above to below — and the time to act on it is now. Don't sit on increase.

  • 53Gradual Progress

The thing that lasts is built slowly, in correct order. No skipping steps. No marrying on the third date.

  • 57The Gentle Wind

Penetration through gentleness. Slow, persistent, deep influence that works by not being resisted.

  • 59Dispersion

Things have hardened. The dispersion is mercy — letting the ice melt so the water can move again.

  • 61Inner Truth中孚

When inner truth meets the moment, even pigs and fishes respond. Be aligned with yourself before you try to convince anyone.

Upper trigram: Fire ·

  • 14Great Possession大有

You have more than you think. The question isn't how to get more — it's how not to be ruined by what you have.

  • 21Biting Through噬嗑

There's an obstruction between you and what should be working. Name it. Then bite through.

  • 30The Clinging Fire

Brightness depends on what it clings to. Choose what feeds your fire — because you do not burn on your own.

  • 35Progress

Rise. Be seen. Take the audience. This is the hexagram of public recognition — and it's rarer than you think.

  • 38Opposition

You disagree. You're not going to stop disagreeing. The work is finding what you can do together anyway.

  • 50The Cauldron

Transformation through nourishment — the slow alchemy of turning raw material into something refined. Tend the fire.

  • 56The Wanderer

You are in transit — through a place you don't belong to and won't stay in. Move carefully, lightly, and keep going.

  • 64Before Completion未濟

The fox almost across the river, getting his tail wet. The book ends in unfinishedness, not in resolution.

Upper trigram: Lake ·

  • 17Following

The skill of following well — when leading would be ego, and following is the actual work.

  • 28Great Exceeding大過

The structure is overloaded. Something has to give — but not by collapsing. Find the exit before the ridgepole cracks.

  • 31Influence

Mutual attraction that's real, not performed. Notice when something arrives — and don't crush it by overthinking.

  • 43Breakthrough

Resolution time. Speak clearly, name the danger, don't escalate to force. The breakthrough is moral, not violent.

  • 45Gathering Together

People are gathering. The hexagram of community formation — but only around a real center. Vague centers scatter.

  • 47Oppression

Exhausted, constrained, words not believed. You're not crazy — the situation actually is this hard. Inner clarity holds.

  • 49Revolution

The molting. The moment the old form falls away because it can no longer contain what is coming.

  • 58The Joyous Lake

Real joy is shared. The kind that lasts requires honest speech and people you can be glad with.
