Hexagram 24 of 64 · Earth over Thunder
Return
復 · Fù
The first small movement of return. Don't oversteer. Don't celebrate yet. Just let it come back.
The Judgment
Success. Going out and coming in without error. Friends come without blame.
The Image
Thunder within the earth: the image of the Turning Point. Thus the kings of antiquity closed the passes at the time of solstice.
What this hexagram is really saying
Fù is the moment after the worst of it. The single yang line at the bottom is the first sign of returning light — the winter solstice, the day after the day after the breakup, the morning after the dark night. The text says "success. Going out and coming in without error. Friends come without blame."
The most common mistake in Fù is to do too much. People who have been through a long contraction — a depression, a long illness, a hard project phase, a relationship failure — finally feel the light returning and they immediately try to make up for lost time. They launch the big thing. They take on the new commitment. They throw themselves back in.
The I Ching's warning is the image: "the kings of antiquity closed the passes at the time of solstice." The return is real, but it is fragile. Protect it. The first shoots of recovery have to be sheltered before they can become anything. In practice: do less than you want to. Choose one small thing. Re-establish one habit. Have one good day. Let the small light grow before you ask it to power your entire life again.
What is returning is not the past. It is a new cycle. Treat it as new.
