Gathering Together

· Cuì

People are gathering. The hexagram of community formation — but only around a real center. Vague centers scatter.

The Judgment

Success. The king approaches his temple. Seeing the great person furthers.

The Image

The lake rests on the earth: the image of Gathering Together. Thus the superior man renews his weapons in order to meet the unforeseen.

What this hexagram is really saying

Cuì is the hexagram of community formation. People are coming together around something — a leader, a cause, an institution, a moment, a shared project. The Wilhelm text says "the king approaches his temple. Seeing the great person furthers."

The critical word in the judgment is temple. Gathering requires a center — a shared object of meaning that everyone is gathering around. Without one, the gathering is a crowd that disperses. With one, it becomes a community that holds.

In modern terms: this is the hexagram of building a movement, growing a team, founding an institution, hosting an event that becomes a thing. The success of the gathering depends almost entirely on whether the center is real — a clear mission, a shared standard, an actual leader who's about something specific. Fuzzy centers gather fuzzy people. Sharp centers gather committed people.

The Wilhelm image adds a wonderfully practical note: "renews his weapons in order to meet the unforeseen." When you gather people, you create the conditions for unexpected conflict — competing interests, factional disputes, edge cases nobody planned for. Prepare for them. Build the governance, the norms, the rules of engagement before you need them. A successful gathering without infrastructure becomes a crisis at the first disagreement.

If you drew Cuì, the question is: what is the actual center here? Is it sharp enough to gather around? And have you prepared for what happens after people show up?
